Spain ended an 18-year wait for a Billie Jean King Cup semi-final on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. In Shenzhen, Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo won the deciding doubles match to seal a 2–1 victory over Kazakhstan. Jessica Bouzas Maneiro had earned Spain's opening point.

Bucsa and Sorribes withstand the doubles pressure

After losing her singles match, Bucsa returned alongside Sorribes to defeat Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva 6–2, 7–5. The Spanish pair, bronze medallists at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivered another significant result for their country.

The break-point numbers show how difficult the victory was: the Kazakh pair created 20 opportunities but converted only two. Bucsa and Sorribes took five of their eight chances, according to the competition's official report.

The second set brought the strongest resistance. RTVE recorded 17 break points for Danilina and Kulambayeva in that set, with just one converted. They also saved three match points before Spain completed the win. The straight-sets score therefore masks a much tighter contest in the decisive games.

Bouzas gives Spain the lead; Putintseva forces a decider

Bouzas put Spain ahead by beating Sonja Zhiyenbayeva 6–2, 6–2. The Spaniard broke serve at the start and remained in control of the opening match.

Yulia Putintseva responded with a 6–2, 3–6, 6–1 victory over Bucsa. That levelled the tie at 1–1, made doubles necessary and left Bucsa needing to refocus quickly between an individual defeat and the team decider.

Czechia awaits in Friday's semi-final
