Alexander Zverev defeated Alexander Bublik 7–6(6), 4–6, 7–6(1) on Tuesday, 13 October, in the Shanghai Masters 1000 fourth round. The top seed will face Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals.

Bublik lets the opening set slip

Zverev saved four set points: one while serving at 5–6 and three in a row in the tie-break. From 3–6 down in the breaker, he won five consecutive points to take the set.

Bublik responded by winning the second set. In the third, the German recovered a break deficit before taking the deciding tie-break 7–1.

What the numbers show

The official statistics credit Bublik with 20 aces, but also eight double faults to Zverev’s one. The German landed 78 of his 101 first serves, approximately 77%, and won 13 of the 23 points played behind his second delivery. Bublik won 19 of 45 second-serve points.

Zverev converted just one of six break-point chances; Bublik took two of three. Despite finishing with fewer breaks, the German won both tie-breaks. He led the total points count 118 to 106.

De Minaur awaits

The Australian advanced by beating Karen Khachanov 6–3, 6–4, also on Tuesday. Zverev will be playing his 40th Masters 1000 quarter-final and his first in Shanghai since 2019.
