Zheng Qinwen reached the Beijing WTA 1000 semifinals on Friday, October 9, 2026. She defeated Elina Svitolina 6–3, 7–6(6) in one hour and 47 minutes, ending the Ukrainian's run in the quarterfinals.
Zheng broke in the opening game and moved ahead 2–0. She earned three breaks during the first set, but neither player dropped serve in the second. Zheng eventually took the tiebreak 8–6, converting her second match point.
Winners and unforced errors
The official statistics recorded 36 winners for Zheng and 15 for Svitolina. Zheng also made considerably more unforced errors: 38 against 13. Despite that gap, she finished with 54% of the points played.
The wild card has now won 12 of her past 13 matches. This is her fourth WTA 1000 semifinal and her third in China, following Beijing and Wuhan in 2024. The WTA projects a return to the Top 40; that remains a projection rather than a confirmed weekly ranking.
Mertens awaits
Elise Mertens secured her place in their semifinal by beating Iga Swiatek 7–6(0), 6–3. Zheng won her only previous meeting with the Belgian, 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 in Charleston in 2025.
The official WTA highlights capture Zheng's quarterfinal against Svitolina at this year's Beijing tournament.
