Iga Swiatek ended Iva Jovic's China Open run on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The Pole won their Beijing round-of-16 match 6–1, 6–3 in one hour and 36 minutes to advance at the WTA 1000 tournament.

Swiatek stops the second-set turnaround

Swiatek built a 5–0 lead and sealed the opening set before her opponent could recover. Jovic then rallied from 0–2 to lead the second set 3–2, briefly shifting the scoreboard in her favor. Swiatek answered by taking four consecutive games to finish their first career meeting.

The victory secured Swiatek's 31st WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance. It is her first trip back to the last eight in Beijing since her 2023 title run.

Jovic's recent progress

The 18-year-old American entered the match with six consecutive wins. On September 19, she retained the Guadalajara title by beating Peyton Stearns 6–4, 6–2. Both of her tour-level singles trophies have come at the Mexican tournament, where she defeated Emiliana Arango in the 2025 final.

That successful title defense lifted Jovic to a career-high No. 13 in the September 21 rankings. She had been ranked No. 73 when she won Guadalajara a year earlier, illustrating how far she progressed between the two titles.

Mertens awaits in the quarterfinals

Swiatek will face Elise Mertens, who eliminated Coco Gauff 6–3, 6–3. The Belgian earned her first win in six meetings with the American and reached the Beijing quarterfinals for the first time.
