Rafael Jodar began his Laver Cup career with a win that restored Team Europe's lead. The 20-year-old Spaniard defeated Alexander Bublik 6–2, 6–3 in one hour and 24 minutes at The O2 in London on Friday, September 25. His victory made it 2–1 to Europe, who went on to finish the opening day 3–1 ahead.

First-serve strength and pressure on return

Jodar won 21 of 26 points behind his first serve and converted four of nine break points. His first break took him 4–2 ahead in the opening set. In the second, he built a 4–0 lead. Bublik recovered one break, but Jodar held his final two service games to complete the win without a match tie-break.

Europe's only newcomer in this edition, Jodar arrived in London ranked No. 14. His season had already brought a first tour-level title in Marrakech, following his time in college tennis at the University of Virginia. A winning debut adds a team competition milestone to the Spaniard's rapid progress.

How the point shaped the opening day

The teams were level before Jodar took the court. Casper Ruud had beaten Francisco Cerundolo 6–7(4), 6–4, [10–8], while Brandon Nakashima defeated Jakub Mensik 6–1, 3–6, [10–7]. The scores in brackets denote match tie-breaks rather than conventional sets.

After Jodar's win, Carlos Alcaraz and Mensik beat Bublik and Taylor Fritz 6–4, 6–4 in doubles. That gave Europe three victories from Friday's four matches.

There is still substantial ground to cover. Each victory is worth two points on Saturday, September 26, and three on Sunday, September 27, compared with one point on opening day. The target is 13 points. The official highlights capture Jodar's debut victory over Bublik.
