Coco Gauff needed three sets to open her Beijing WTA 1000 campaign with a win. On Saturday, October 3, the No. 3 seed defeated Camila Osorio 7–6(4), 4–6, 6–2 in two hours and 18 minutes to reach the China Open's third round.

It was the American's first match since her US Open semifinal and her first meeting with the Colombian on the WTA Tour. The 2024 Beijing champion had won her three previous opening matches at the tournament in straight sets.

Just four points apart

The official statistics show how close the contest remained: Gauff won 99 points to Osorio's 95. The American finished with six aces to her opponent's none, while both players committed five double faults. Gauff won 38 of 63 points behind her first serve; Osorio won 38 of 60.

Gauff took the opening tiebreak 7–4, but Osorio responded in the second set to force a decider. The American then conceded just two games in the final set. That 6–2 finish settled a match in which the overall points margin stayed narrow.

In her post-match comments reported by the WTA, Gauff highlighted her ability to put the frustration of the second set behind her and regroup for the third. Highlights from the official WTA channel capture the key passages of a demanding opener.

Sun Xinran awaits

Gauff will next face Sun Xinran. The Chinese player defeated No. 27 seed Cristina Bucsa 6–4, 7–5 in one hour and 31 minutes. Having negotiated a three-set opening test, Gauff now continues her campaign against a home player.
