Arthur Fils defeated Luca Van Assche 6–3, 6–2 on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, to reach the second round of the Tokyo ATP 500. Their all-French encounter lasted one hour and 34 minutes at Ariake Coliseum.
A Top 10 player in qualifying
His main-draw opener followed an unusual route for the world No. 9. Fils had to enter qualifying because, as he explained to the ATP, the decision to play in Tokyo came a few hours after the entry deadline.
He beat Martin Damm and Kamil Majchrzak to secure his place. Against Van Assche, he converted three of the ten break points he created. The 2024 champion now has six wins from six main-draw matches in Tokyo.
What the new ranking means
On Monday, September 28, Fils climbed two places to make his Top 10 debut at the age of 22. The French Tennis Federation recorded him as the 13th Frenchman to reach the group.
There are two distinct milestones here: he is the first Frenchman to make a Top 10 debut since Lucas Pouille in March 2018, and the first to hold a place in the group since Gael Monfils left it in October 2020.
The season that carried Fils to his career-high ranking includes titles at the Barcelona ATP 500 and the Cincinnati Masters 1000. In Tokyo, his new standing coincided with the requirement to start in the qualifying tournament.
