Leylah Fernandez won the WTA 500 title in Singapore on Sunday, September 27, defeating Australia's Talia Gibson 7–5, 6–0 in one hour and 38 minutes. It was the Canadian's first singles title of the 2026 season, her sixth on the WTA Tour and her second at WTA 500 level.
Nine games that settled the final
The match turned late in the opening set. Fernandez won the last nine games, moving from 4–5 down to take the set 7–5 before completing the second without dropping a game.
The official statistics underline her pressure on return. Fernandez converted six of 12 break points and won 37 of the 69 points played on Gibson's serve. The Australian broke twice from five opportunities but could not maintain the contest after the opening set.
Fernandez finished with 70 of the match's 122 points and five aces. Gibson was playing her first WTA Tour final, while the Canadian was contesting her ninth.
A semi-final comeback on the way to the trophy
The sixth seed lost only one set throughout the tournament. In the quarter-finals, Fernandez knocked out top seed Mirra Andreeva 6–2, 7–5. It was her second consecutive win over the Russian, following their National Bank Open meeting in August.
Her biggest test came against Maja Chwalinska on Saturday. The Pole won the opening five games, but Fernandez recovered to prevail 1–6, 6–4, 6–2 in two hours and eight minutes. She saved a break point that would have left her 2–0 down in the deciding set before taking control.
Gibson advanced to the final by walkover after Tatiana Prozorova withdrew from their semi-final. On Sunday, the Australian kept the opening set close, but Fernandez turned her late surge into a title.
