Kimberly Birrell claimed her first WTA tour-level singles title on Sunday, September 27, beating fellow Australian Maya Joint 6–4, 6–2 in the WTA 250 Seoul final. The match lasted one hour and 23 minutes. On Monday, the official rankings confirmed another milestone for Birrell: her Top 50 debut.
From the trophy to No. 41
Birrell climbed 19 places, from No. 60 to a career-high No. 41. At 28, she converted her third final at this level into her first title. Her two previous championship matches had also come in Asia, at Osaka in 2024 and Chennai in 2025.
Joint left Seoul with a substantial ranking gain as well. The 20-year-old runner-up rose 24 places, from No. 99 to No. 75. Both Australians saw their runs reflected in the rankings released on September 28.
Turning the final around
Joint led 2–0 in the opening set, but Birrell recovered and took control of the score. After securing the first set 6–4, the eventual champion maintained her advantage in the second to complete a straight-sets victory. The WTA's official highlights capture the title match.
It was the first all-Australian tour final since Strasbourg in 2017, when Samantha Stosur faced Daria Gavrilova, now Daria Saville.
Two wins on a demanding Saturday
Birrell reached the final after a busy day on court. Rain had compressed the schedule, leaving her to play both the quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday. She won each match in three sets, first overcoming Katie Volynets and then Anna Bondar.
Joint also played twice that day to book her place in the championship match. Sunday's meeting brought both campaigns in South Korea to a close; for Birrell, it added the title that had eluded her in two previous finals.
